United Nations Climate Change Committee
The United Nations has been a driving force in the effort to address climate change. The United Nations Climate Change Committee has spent a lot of effort in order to track climate change and respond to it. The Committee helps countries respond to climate change whether it is lowering greenhouse gas emissions, providing new ways to produce energy, or even making them pay money to help for the damages they have done.
Kyoto Protocol
In 1997, delegated from 166 countries met in Kyoto, Japan at the United Nations Climate Change Conference to negotiate actions to reduce global warming. This meeting led to the creation of the Kyoto Protocol. The protocol established the fact that global warming is a real issue and human emission of Carbon Dioxide is the reason. Many different goals were set in the Kyoto Protocol. Developed nations, such as the United States and China, set goals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions because they were the main cause of the problem. However, underdeveloped nations did not have to reduce their emissions; instead, they could focus on becoming developed.
Paris Climate Change Agreement
The Paris Climate Agreement was the most recent effort by the United Nations to address climate change. The agreement did a very good job at looking at the situations of different countries and helped draft a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to prevent further climate change. The agreement is adamant about using and making new technology available so that countries can begin to lower their greenhouse gas emissions by using the cleanest forms of energy.
